Origin & history

Mudford Sock is a quaint hamlet within the parish of Mudford, historically part of the Stone Hundred in Somerset. Its rural charm is enriched by its connection to the Monarch’s Way, a 615-mile long-distance footpath that retraces the historic escape route of King Charles II following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651.

The path meanders through this peaceful area, offering a link to one of England’s most dramatic historical episodes and providing an opportunity for walkers to immerse themselves in scenic landscapes and heritage alike.

The “Mudford Sock” tartan, its colors and layout  symbolises the unique historical and geographical character of the place.

1. Earthy Browns and Greens: Representing the agricultural roots and the surrounding fields and countryside of Mudford Sock, these tones reflect the connection to the land and its rural traditions.

2. Muted Blue: Symbolizing the nearby River Yeo, which is integral to the area’s natural landscape, this color brings in the calming essence of flowing water.

3. Soft Beige or Cream: Echoing the traditional homes and the heritage of the village, these lighter shades add warmth and a nod to the timeless charm of the area.

4. Rust Red or Deep Orange: A subtle nod to the autumnal hues that may dominate the region’s fields and trees during certain seasons, adding a vibrant yet grounded accent to the pattern.

5. Tartan Layout: The design features evoke the organic and historic character of the village, blending tradition with the rugged appeal of rural life.

Disclaimer: The fashion plaids designed by Strangely are inspired by fables and whimsical storytelling, weaving cock-and-bull tales into their threads. However, the place names and historical elements interwoven into these designs are based on true stories, grounding our chaos of couture in authentic heritage. As fablers, we mix truth and fiction to create patterns that honor both history and imagination.
